Living History Teaching Artist

Ana Velazquez is a Mexican-American director and teaching artist from the South Side of Chicago. She currently teaches Second Saturdays at Goodman Theatre, where prior teaching has also included Disney Musicals in Schools and Playbuild Youth Intensive. She has led theatre workshops for children and families in migrant shelters with Once Upon Our Time Capsule, and has taught in Indiana as part of We the Many, a community-based artist residency. Ana is a company member emeritus with PlayMakers Laboratory and an Artistic Affiliate with American Blues Theater. She holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Illinois Chicago.

As a bilingual teaching artist, I value creating spaces where students can express themselves freely, whether that happens in English or Spanish. Language is an essential part of students’ history, and it’s important that they feel seen and heard through storytelling and dialogue.
