Already a week in! Rehearsals for TimeLine’s next production — the Chicago premiere of Winter Miller’s In Darfur, directed by Nick Bowling, started last Monday, December 6.
Since that first rehearsal one week ago, cast and production team have already finished their table work (a slow read of the script, asking and answering questions about characters, facts, context along the way) and have been working on their feet for several days, starting to block the play and make the many small and large decisions that will create the staging we all get to see.
Informed by the playwright’s experiences accompanying Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof in Sudan, this play is a provocative, inspired-by-real-life account of the horrors of genocide. We expect In Darfur may prompt more discussion and, hopefully, inspire more action than any of TimeLine’s previous 45 productions.
There will be much more information and conversation to come on this blog, but for now we wanted to introduce the team that is bringing this important story to Chicago. The entire cast will be making their TimeLine debut, and we’ve assembled a design team full of familiar faces as well as some new to TimeLine.
The cast features Tyla Abercrumbie, Kelli Simpkins, Gregory Isaac, Eddie Jordan III, Mildred Marie Langford, Brian-Alwyn Newland and Ebony Wimbs. And the production team includes Amanda Sweger (Scenic Design), Lindsey Pate (Costume Design), Keith Parham (Lighting Design), Andrew Hansen (Sound Design and Original Music), Mike Tutaj (Video and Projections Design), Julia Eberhardt (Properties Design), Maren Robinson (Dramaturg), Cheney Tardio (Stage Manager), Amanda Baker (Production Assistant), John Kearns (Productions Manager), Will Allan (Assistant Director), Eva Breneman (Dialect Coach), Caleb McAndrew (Technical Director) and Mac Vaughey (Master Electrician).
Enjoy these photos from first rehearsal, and we’ll be back soon with much more about In Darfur.
